Okay, so you are tired of having a boss, you’ve got a great business idea and you have just read our post on the challenges of forming your own company and have decided to take the plunge and begin the company formation process. So, what’s the next step? In this post we look at how to form a company on a tight budget.
Forming a company on a limited budget may seem like a difficult task, full of compromises that will make it impossible for you to fully realise you entrepreneurial dream. But it needn’t be that way. Indeed, the current economic context may offer you the perfect opportunity to cut unnecessary costs and ensure that every penny you spend gives a better return on investment than if you had an unlimited budget to fritter away.
If you follow a few simple steps, it is possible for you to form your company on a budget without having to compromise or cut corners.
During the start up phase of your company, it is very unlikely you won’t have any huge staff or office requirements. Therefore, one of the most obvious ways of reducing your overhead initially, is to work from home and employ a skeleton staff – if you choose to have any at all. If this is not possible, due to the nature of your company, have a look at ‘hot desking’ or renting premises in less popular parts of the city.
Similarly, if you feel you do need the additional support of staff during the start up phase, enlist the help of family and friends; most will be able to spare the odd afternoon or weekend here and there.
As we have commented previously, from the point of company formation, it is likely that you will have to take responsibility for most areas of your company, from day to day operations to marketing and sales. Therefore, take the time to gain a working knowledge of all the different disciplines involved in running your company. Not only will this help you cut costs initially, the skills you acquire will be invaluable as your company grows.
Research the best deals on the market. In the current economic climate, from advertising rates to supplier costs, there is always a deal to be done. Invest time in making sure you are getting the best possible value from every pound you spend.
